With their black facial mask and pointed snout, raccoon dogs bear an uncanny resemblance to raccoons.
Also known as tanukis in Japan, they are found mainly in East Asia. The Japanese regard them as bringers of prosperity and luck.
Tanukis are the only species of dog to hibernate in winter. Preparation starts in autumn, when they stock up fat reserves and grow their fur to better insulate against the cold.
While not quite your Marvel superhero, wolverines are no less fearless – they can scare bigger predators like bears into giving up their catch. Their teeth are so strong they can handle frozen carcasses.
When feeding, they scent mark their food with a urine mask, leading to their nickname of skunk bears. But wolverines are not bears. They’re the largest terrestrial weasels.
