Kumaran is the Head Keeper of the Great Ape section. He started his career with Singapore Zoo in February 1997 as an animal trainer and presenter. He is an avid animal lover and has worked with a wide range of animals such as the Asian elephants, orangutans, chimpanzees, mandrills and proboscis monkey.
Apart from leading his team, he is involved in daily husbandry and coordinating animal enrichment. Kumaran also ensures all activities goes on as scheduled specially with the free-ranging orangutans and the Jungle Breakfast programme. He has a strong interest in conservation and wishes for animals to be protected in the wild so that future generations can appreciate the wonders of wildlife.
Agricultural expansion and infrastructural development have resulted in the loss of large areas of orangutan habitat. Pushed out of their natural environment into areas where forest and farmlands meet, Sumatran orangutans come into conflict with humans, ending up injured or worse, captured to be kept as illegal pets.
