Kumaran is the Head Keeper of the Great Ape section. He started his career with Singapore Zoo in February 1997 as an animal trainer and presenter. He is an avid animal lover and has worked with a wide range of animals such as the Asian elephants, orangutans, chimpanzees, mandrills and proboscis monkey.
Apart from leading his team, he is involved in daily husbandry and coordinating animal enrichment. Kumaran also ensures all activities goes on as scheduled specially with the free-ranging orangutans and the Jungle Breakfast programme. He has a strong interest in conservation and wishes for animals to be protected in the wild so that future generations can appreciate the wonders of wildlife.
As forest fires have forced orangutans out of their habitat and into human settlements, tensions have risen between men and apes. The Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), a group dedicated to the protection of Sumatran orangutans, is working to ensure humane treatment of wandering orangutans, while helping farmers preserve their crops.
