Birds of prey are also known as raptors, a term which is derived
from the Latin word raptare, meaning “seize and carry away”. These birds
are characterised by their sharp talons, hooked beaks and large penetrating
eyes.

What makes it unique
Kings of the skies
Birds of prey are amongst the most magnificent of hunters. Guests at the Bird Park can catch a glimpse of their majestic aura at the Birds of Prey exhibit, or experience first-hand their amazing aerial prowess at the Kings of the Skies shows, hosted at the Hawk Arena. Those who wish for a more exclusive experience can take part in the Bird’s Eye Tour for the chance to fly and handle birds of prey.
Putting their talons to use
With their sharp, taloned feet and powerful grip, raptors (with the exception of some vultures) are capable of seizing and carrying away a diverse selection of prey, from small invertebrates to good-sized mammals like monkeys, sloths and deer. Species with short legs and tough, stubby talons tend to hunt for prey on the ground. Those who capture other birds in the air are usually long-legged with curved, needle-like talons. A powerful hind toe with a large claw normally points to a diet of large mammals.
