Home to over 40% of all species in the world, wetlands are vital to the survival of humans, animals and plants. They provide us with clean water, raw materials and medicines, on top of performing the ecological roles of erosion and flood control. Sadly, wetlands are also some of the world’s most rapidly disappearing habitats, being prime locations for the development of agriculture and fisheries. Many species dependent on wetlands have seen their range greatly reduced.
A lot of thought was put into plant selection and exhibit design to recreate the birds’ natural environment. Simulated surf created by a wave machine prevents the buildup of algae. The waves never fail to amuse our great white pelicans!
The birds in the aviary have further enhanced the specially-constructed breeding platforms with twigs and other nesting material. Who knows, you may even glimpse little nestlings peeking out from their nest during breeding season!
