Mainly southern Sudan, northern Uganda, western Tanzania and northeastern Zambia. Smaller populations in eastern Zaire and Rwanda.
Besides capture for the bird trade, shoebills are also threatened by destruction of their habitat, much of which has been converted for cultivation and pasture. They are also affected by pollution from exploration for oil in its habitat.
We are planning to breed the shoebill here at the Bird Park.
