Giant Panda Conservation
Wildlife Reserves Singapore is getting ready for the arrival of two giant pandas, which will be on loan from China. The pandas will make their debut in 2012 when WRS’ new $140 million river-themed animal attraction, the River Safari, opens to the public.
A special climate controlled enclosure will be constructed, with temperature maintained between 18 and 22 degrees, and humidity set at 50 to 60% all year round.
WRS will also start a breeding programme for this endangered species. There are currently only about 1,600 pandas left in the wild and another 200 in captivity.
The pandas are symbolic of the close ties between Singapore and China, as the Republic celebrates the 20th Anniversary of friendly Sino-Singapore relations.
To support this conservation effort, CapitaLand Limited, one of Asia’s largest real estate companies with a strong presence in China, has adopted the pandas over the 10-year collaborative programme.
Outside of Greater China, Singapore will be the seventh country to receive a pair of pandas from the government of China.
